The History of a Magnificent Breed
The origins of the Old English Sheepdog breed are obscure but it is thought to be a combination of the Scottish Bearded Collie and the Russian Owtchar. The breed has been around since at least the 1800's and achieved official breed status in 1873 with the founding of The Kennel Club in England. The first Old English Sheepdog came to North America around 1888.
Originally a herding dog, the Old English Sheepdog now enjoys being a companion dog and protector. The Old English Sheepdog is good-natured, patient, eager to please and is very family oriented yet at the same time a very competent guard dog. A natural clown and sure to steal your heart. The Sheepdog's height to the shoulder ranges between 21 to 25 inches and weight varies from 60 to 90 pounds. The sheepdog is a double coated dog with a wiry, shaggy topcoat and a downy undercoat. It is important that the sheepdog is groomed weekly, to ensure that the coat does not become matted. I have read that they are
moderate shedders, yet I have found that virtually no hair comes off them
when petted and I would actually consider them to be very minimal shedders.
